Schellen-Ursli, originally titled Uorsin in Romansh, is a children's story by author Selina Chönz and artist Alois Carigiet. It is one of Switzerland's best-known picture books, with over a million copies sold. The book was first published in 1945.
‘High up in the mountains, far away from here, there lives a little boy just like you,’ begins the story. It is set in Guarda and tells of the custom of Chalandamarz, which takes place every year on 1 March. According to tradition, winter is driven out in spring by the loud ringing of bells by the children of the Engadin. Here are a few suggestions on how to experience Schellenursli up close in Guarda.

chalandamarz custom
This children's story revolves around the ancient Engadin custom of Chalandamarz (chalanda = first). It dates back to the time when the Romans occupied what was then Raetia. At that time, Chalandamarz marked the beginning of the year and served to drive away evil spirits. Today, on 1 March, the village children sing and ring bells as they parade through the village to chase away winter.
