Chalandamarz
We celebrate the Chalandamarz on the 1st March (chalanda means "first" in Romansch). This tradition has existed since the times of the Roman occupation of Rhaetia. Back then Chalandamarz marked the start of the year and served to drive away the evil spirits.
Nowadays, on this day the school children parade through the village singing and ringing bells in order to drive out winter. The precise details of the festivities vary markedly from village to village. In addition, traditions involve cracking whips, ringing cow-bells, and dancing round the village fountains (for more information see link on right).
A prominent portrayal of this custom is the picture book 'Schellenursli', by the artist Alois Cargiet.
The Schellenursli Trail - a wonderful walk for the whole family. Past the idyllic lake "Lajet" over mountain streams, through meadows and forests, the trail leads up hill and down dale to the "Alp Suot" alpine pasture. Signposted with 20 Schellenursli signs, and in three languages, it is a great day out (more information in the link on the right hand side of the page). The walk can only be done during summer.
