Spring awakens in the Engadine mountains

Dependent on altitude, the mountain spring lasts from April to late May/early June. It represents the time between the melting of the snow and the start of the mountain summer. In this intensive time the streams swell with the meltwater, poppies, crocuses, pasque flowers and gentians carpet the hillsides, deer are lured out of the forests by the fresh grass and are easily observed in the meadows; marmots emerge from their burrows to enliven the countryside.

During this part of the year surprises are by no means unusual on mountain walks in the Lower Engadine!
