Hotel Meisser History
It all began in the romantic hotel "Sternen" in Chur, where a teacher of the name Andreas Meisser from Mastrils spent his free hours at the table, discussing and philosophising. There he also met his future wife, Barbla Barth. She was from Guarda and was training as a midwife in Chur. In the "Sternen" Hotel she earned a little money as a waitress. After her training she returned to the Hotel "The Sun", her parental home in Guarda. Andreas Meisser followed her and they got married. In the year 1893 Andreas Meisser took the opportunity to buy the Chasa Meni, a house previously belonging to the Planta family, built in 1645 (today the Hotel Meisser). In doing so he laid the foundation stone of our today more than 100-year old hotel history. The young married couple set up 15 beds and on the 15th of June 1893 the first visitor came, followed by distinguished clientele from far and wide. In 1902 they did the first great renovation. The "tablà" (hay stable) was converted into the dining-room. The beautiful stucco ceiling, still preserved today, exemplifies the late farming-"art nouveau" style. After the passing of the parents Barth "The Sun" also came into the possession of the family Meisser. Barbla gave Andreas three children: Andreas, Philippine and Pepina.
Andreas met his wife Wilhelmine Seif in Germany and they continued with the hotel. Times were not exactly rosy so they kept themselves above water by doing agricultural work on the side. In 1918 the hotel's fortunes picked up. Numerous visitors came to stay at Guarda. Wilhelmine and Andreas Meisser also became the parents of three children: Andrew, Pepina and Rudolf.
Rudolf overtook the hotel business. On the 5th of November 1935 he married Pauline Willy, the daughter of a farmer and coachman from Guarda. Pauline and Rudolf, the third generation, invested a lot in their hotel. The guest rooms were equipped with running hot and cold water and a bathroom on every floor. In 1935 a modern central heating system was installed to enable the hotel to receive visitors until late autumn. A further step for Pauline and Rudolf was the glazing of the south veranda in 1939, with revolutionary panorama windows. During the Second World War they practiced agriculture, this time on a more intensive scale, and made it through by living self-sufficiently. After the war the hotel almost went under. In the year 1952 Rudolf Meisser bought the Hotel Bellevue in Davos-village, where after reconstruction the Private-Hotel Meisser arose. Now the family was running a hotel in both summer and winter. In Guarda the first rooms were equipped with shower or bath. Pauline and Rudolf had two children: Sylvia and Ralf. The two children worked a lot in the house and hotel.
Ralf continued with the hotelier tradition. He trained as a cook and graduated from the hotel management school in Lausanne. He later travelled around the world to get professional and life experience. When father Rudolf developed a heart illness in 1967 Ralf returned to Guarda and took over the management of the family business. In the year 1971 he got married to Kathrin Schwarzenbach. She gave him two children: Benno and Sandra. Kathrin was a great support for Ralf. An period of modernisation began and the well-kept kitchen of Ralf Meisser soon became widely-known - the restaurant in Guarda was a secret tip and popular meeting place for gourmands.
1978 a private apartment was built for the Meisser family in Davos. The children Benno and Sandra went to school in Davos. Sadly, Father Rudolf died without seeing this great transformation in Davos. Mother Pauline, a wise and far-sighted woman continued to play a lively role in the running of the hotel for a further ten years. She died in 1991.
Some years ago the family was able to buy the Chasa Pepina (the suite house just across the street). It was carefully renovated and suites were built from the old living rooms. The family Meisser was also able to buy the Chasa Fortuena, situated next-door (the white house across the street). This house had been sold by Rudolf Meisser in times of emergency. Today it is used by the family as a private residence.
Meanwhile the fifth generation is running the Hotel. Son Benno became a cook, then went to the higher Hotel School in Thun, and like his father he gathered experience travelling around the world. Today he and his girlfriend Maya Aebli are running the hotel, which is now open in summer- and wintertime. In the basement of the Chasa Pepina the bar "Parsepan" was built. Meanwhile the hotel in Davos was sold, and the parents still help out in the background. The daughter Sandra wrote this family history for us. Many thanks, Sandra!
Quotation of a visitor in 1926:
Ciao Guarda!
Farewell Guarda!
When will I see you again,
with all the flowers, the blooming lilac,
with your beautiful forests and willows?
Farewell, now I'm afraid we must part. -
I will never forget the friendly people,
the guests, the hosts, the good food!
Vacations were rarely so beautiful,
and gladly I call: farewell! I will see you again!
